Get your AI visibility checked or call: +49 151 1576 5566SEO vs GEO is a question about goals more than methods. Search engine optimization earns your page a position in the results and the click that follows, while generative engine optimization makes sure AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews mention your company and cite your page when they write an answer. The foundation is shared, and Google says so itself: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Where the two differ is in how sources get picked, which outside signals matter, and how you measure the result. In Ahrefs' March 2026 data, only about 38 percent of pages cited in AI Overviews ranked in the top ten for the same query.
- SEO is about rank and clicks, GEO is about being named and cited in an AI answer. Crawlability, indexing and useful content serve both.
- Google states there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode, yet a top ranking no longer guarantees a citation.
- Ahrefs found that 76 percent of AI Overview citations came from top ten pages in 2025, and only about 38 percent in its March 2026 update.
- Brand mentions on other websites correlated far more strongly with AI Overview visibility than backlink counts did in a study of 75,000 brands.

What does SEO vs GEO mean for your visibility?
Generative engine optimization shifts the target of the work rather than replacing it. With search engine optimization (SEO) you want a page to rank high for a query and get clicked. With GEO you want an AI system that writes its own answer from several sources to mention your company, link your page as a source and describe what you offer correctly.
The term has a traceable origin, which is more than can be said for most of its cousins. It comes from a research paper first posted in November 2023 and presented at the KDD conference in 2024, whereas AEO and LLMO grew out of marketing practice. We sort out the whole family of acronyms in GEO vs AEO vs LLMO, and the short definition lives in our glossary under generative engine optimization.
Is GEO replacing SEO, or building on what you already have?
Is GEO replacing SEO? Not according to Google, which has been unusually direct about it. Its documentation for site owners says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary; a page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet, and that is it.
Gary Illyes of Google repeated the point in July 2025, saying that you do not need AEO or GEO to show up in Google's AI features and that normal SEO is enough. So if your site is fast, crawlable and answers real questions, most of the groundwork for both goals is already done.
And on the content side the two pull in the same direction anyway. The original GEO paper measured that adding sources, quotations and concrete statistics could raise visibility in generative answers by up to 40 percent (in a lab setting, which is worth keeping in mind). Well sourced, clearly structured pages do not hurt classic rankings either, which is why we see little point in running two separate content teams.
The GEO vs SEO difference side by side for your planning
The GEO vs SEO difference is easiest to see in one table. It shows where both disciplines ask for the same thing and where they part ways, based on the evidence in this article.
| Aspect | Traditional SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A strong position in the results and the click to your page | A mention in the AI answer, a citation as a source and an accurate description of your offer |
| Where it works | Google and Bing result pages | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Technical base | Crawlability, indexing, page speed | The same base, with no additional requirements at Google |
| How sources are picked | Ranking for a single query | Several related sub-queries per question, citations often from pages outside the top ten |
| Outside signals | Backlinks to your domain | Mentions of your brand on other sites, linked or not |
| Content | A page per topic with a clear search intent | Sections that answer one question on their own, with figures, sources and quotes |
| Measurement | Position, clicks and click-through rate in Search Console | Impressions in AI features, citations in Copilot, repeated prompts across AI tools |
| Stability | One result list per query | Answers vary noticeably from one run to the next |
Why a top ranking in AI SEO vs SEO no longer secures your citation
The core question behind AI SEO vs SEO is whether ranking well still gets you into the answer. For a while the data said mostly yes. In July 2025 Ahrefs analysed 1.9 million citations from one million AI Overviews and found that 76 percent of cited pages ranked in the top ten.
The March 2026 update tells a different story. Across 863,000 keyword results pages and around four million cited URLs, only 38 percent of cited pages sat in the top ten, and the rest split almost evenly between positions eleven to one hundred and pages that did not rank in the top hundred at all. Ahrefs points to query fan-out, which Google describes in its own documentation: AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue several related searches across subtopics and build the answer from what they find.
In practice your main keyword still matters, it is just one way into the answer among several. Pages that cover the side questions around a topic with clear, sourced sections get picked more often. How we use the term AI SEO and what it means for your site is covered in AI SEO, and how Google assembles its summaries in Google AI Overviews.
of pages cited in Google's AI Overviews ranked in the top ten in March 2026, down from 76 percent a year earlier.
Which signals matter more in generative engine optimization for your brand?
In generative engine optimization the weight of outside signals moves. Classic SEO treats backlinks as the main sign of authority, but an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands points elsewhere for Google's AI Overviews. Brand visibility there correlated most strongly with the number of brand mentions across the web (0.664), while the number of backlinks came in at 0.218.
That number should not be stretched too far, since correlation is not causation and large, well known brands lead on almost every metric. Still, it matches what we tend to see in our audits: a technically flawless website can be missing from AI answers simply because trade media, directories and industry portals barely mention the company.
So GEO does not stop at your own domain. Mentions in trade articles, listings in directories and coverage of your projects all count, ideally with accurate and consistent details, so that an AI piecing together several sources ends up with the same picture of your business.
was the correlation between brand web mentions and visibility in Google's AI Overviews. Backlinks came in at 0.218.
How to measure AI visibility when rankings only tell half the story
To measure AI visibility you need different tools from the ones that track rankings. Search Console shows positions, clicks and click-through rates, and clicks are exactly what is getting thinner. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults and found that when an AI summary appeared, they clicked a traditional result on only 8 percent of searches, against 15 percent without one.
The search engines now help a little. In June 2026 Google introduced Search Console reports for generative AI features that show how often URLs from your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and since 31 August 2026 they are available to all websites worldwide. Bing Webmaster Tools has offered an AI Performance report since February 2026, counting how often your content is cited in Copilot and in Bing's AI generated summaries.
For ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude there is nothing comparable, so you repeat the same prompts and count. Repeat, because answers vary a lot: in a SparkToro study of 2,961 responses, there was less than a one in a hundred chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI would return the same list of brands twice across a hundred runs. How often your brand appears over many runs says more than any single position. We explain how to get started in measure AI visibility.
Why SEO vs GEO is not an either-or for your business
Treating SEO vs GEO as an either-or is the wrong frame, in our view, because one rests on the other. A page Google has not indexed cannot be cited in AI Overviews, and a brand nobody writes about rarely gets named, however clean the code. It makes more sense to extend the SEO work you already do with the parts that only matter for AI answers.
Microsoft frames the shift in a similar way in its guide to AEO and GEO: traditional SEO focused on clicks, and now AEO and GEO determine visibility in AI powered experiences. For a mid-sized company that means rankings and clicks still count, but there is a second question next to them, namely whether the AI names you when your customers ask, and whether what it says about you is correct.
How much weight each part deserves probably depends on how your customers search. If many of your enquiries are about products that need explaining, it is worth starting on the AI side sooner. Our GEO agency can give you a baseline with a competitor comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO just a new name for SEO?
Not quite. The technical base is the same, and Google asks for nothing extra for its AI features. The goal differs, though: GEO is about whether an AI names your company and cites your page in its answer, not only where your page ranks.
Can good SEO alone get me into Google AI Overviews?
Google says yes, there are no additional requirements. A good ranking is still no guarantee, since in Ahrefs' March 2026 data only about 38 percent of citations came from pages in the top ten.
Do I need llms.txt or special schema markup for GEO?
Not for Google, its documentation on AI features says so explicitly. What an llms.txt file can still do, and where it falls short, is covered in llms.txt.
Do backlinks still matter for GEO?
Yes, though apparently less than mentions. In the Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, visibility in Google's AI Overviews tracked brand mentions on other sites much more closely than backlink counts.
How quickly does GEO show results?
Hard to say in general. Changes on your site work once they are crawled, mentions elsewhere usually take longer. Because AI answers vary, judge progress over many repeated prompts, not a single answer.
Bring generative engine optimization into your SEO roadmap step by step
- 01
Secure the base
Check that your key pages are indexed and eligible for a snippet. Without that there is neither a ranking nor a citation.
- 02
Cover the side questions
Collect the questions customers ask around your offer and answer each in its own sourced section.
- 03
Look after mentions
Make sure trade media, directories and portals list your company with accurate, consistent details.
- 04
Measure both
Keep tracking rankings and clicks, and add the AI feature reports in Search Console, Bing's AI Performance report and repeated prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity.
SEO and GEO share a foundation and measure different things. Once you know whether AI names you, you can decide where the next hour of work should go.
