AI glossary · GEO (generative engine optimization)

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: work on your content so that generative search systems include your brand as a source in their answers. Generative means the service reads several sources for a question and writes its own text from them, as search in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI answers does.

In brief
  • Of all the AI search acronyms, only GEO has an origin you can look up.
  • Evidence and figures help, mindless repetition of search terms hardly does.
  • Google doesn't ask for an extra file or special markup.
  • Whether it works for you only shows once you put real customer questions to AI systems.

Origin

Where does GEO come from, and what did the research measure?

In November 2023 a paper titled "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" appeared on arXiv, written by researchers from Princeton University and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, and in August 2024 it was presented at KDD, a data mining conference. The team rewrote web content in different ways and used around 10,000 search queries to check how often it then showed up in generative answers (they also tested on Perplexity, which anyone can use). In the best case visibility rose by up to 40 percent.

Citing sources, adding direct quotes and putting figures where something vague used to be did most of the work. Keyword stuffing barely helped. The tests ran in the lab, though, and the gains varied by topic, so we read the paper as a direction rather than a promise for any single page.

Context

How does GEO differ from SEO and AEO, and why does that help you plan?

SEO wants a place in the results list. GEO wants your text to appear as a source in an AI answer, and AEO thinks in terms of the one short answer to a clear question. There is no accepted line between them.

That's fine in practice. A page that answers right at the top, phrases its subheadings as questions and backs up its figures serves all three. And your website is only one source among many: a machine builder with an excellent product page can still be missing from AI answers simply because no trade media, directory or industry portal mentions it.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO the same as SEO?

Not quite, but it builds on it. Google itself says the SEO basics apply to its AI features too. A classic visibility index, however, won't tell you whether AI answers mention you.

Can anyone guarantee the top spot in ChatGPT?

No, and a promise like that should make you wary. What an AI answers depends on the question and the system and changes over time. The serious approach: measure, improve in a targeted way, measure again.

The acronym your provider uses matters less than whether an AI names your company when your customers ask.
