AI glossary · AEO (answer engine optimization)

AEO stands for answer engine optimization: work on content so that a system takes your page as the direct answer to a clearly asked question. The term comes from SEO practice rather than research, and it is older than today's chatbots.

In brief
  • Its forerunners are the answer boxes in Google Search, around since about 2014, and voice assistants.
  • The acronym only came into wide use in 2024 and 2025.
  • Typical AEO questions are: what is it, how does it work, roughly what does it cost?
  • There is no binding definition, and many people use AEO and GEO interchangeably.

Origin

Where does AEO come from, and why is everyone suddenly using it?

Two things paved the way. One was the highlighted answer boxes above Google's results, the other was voice assistants that read out exactly one answer to a question (not ten links). If you wanted to appear there, your answer had to be short and unambiguous.

The word only really spread once AI answers became an everyday part of search, in 2024 and 2025. Since then it often stands next to GEO and LLMO, and if you look closely, each source draws the lines a little differently.

Context

How does AEO differ from GEO, and what does that mean for your content?

AEO thinks in terms of a single question and an answer that stands on its own. GEO aims at answers where a system weighs several sources and combines them into new text. Both need clear answer paragraphs, and GEO adds evidence an AI can rely on.

The good news is you don't have to choose. A page that gives the answer right at the top, phrases its subheadings as questions and backs up its figures serves both schools of thought. This glossary page is built exactly that way, and we suspect it didn't bother you while reading.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO mean and how is it different from classic SEO?

Written out it is answer engine optimization. It means the short answer to a clear question, the kind answer boxes and voice assistants deliver. Classic SEO aims for good rankings in search results and remains the foundation AEO builds on.

Is AEO the same as generative engine optimization?

Not quite. AEO thinks in the one direct answer, GEO in answers built from several sources. Because there is no accepted line between them, people still often use the two as synonyms.

How can I tell whether AEO is working for me?

Put your customers' questions to several AI systems and note whether and how they mention your company. The acronym won't tell you, the answer will.

A page that answers its readers' question first helps people and answer systems alike.
