Why is AIO ambiguous, and what do you risk if you don't ask?
In one reading AIO is an umbrella term, artificial intelligence optimization, covering everything meant to make a brand visible in AI answers, whether in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google. In the other it simply abbreviates Google's AI Overviews, the AI summaries shown above the regular search results. Both uses appear in professional articles, agencies included.
The risk follows directly. You assume your visibility across all AI systems will improve, and in the end someone only works on a single feature of Google Search (or the other way round). One question takes a minute: does this cover all AI systems or only Google's AI Overviews?
What do you really need for AIO in the sense of AI Overviews?
Less than some offers suggest. Google states in its documentation that AI Overviews and AI Mode come with no additional requirements. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, the proven SEO basics still apply, and special files or particular markup aren't needed.
Other providers such as OpenAI or Anthropic offer no comparably detailed guidance. So we prefer to measure: which pages a system cites shows up in its answer, and you can check that again and again.
