AI glossary · LLMO (large language model optimization)

LLMO stands for large language model optimization: work on content so that large language models understand it, reuse it and describe your company correctly in chat. Where GEO starts from the search system, this approach puts the language model itself at the centre. You'll often hear LLM SEO for the same thing.

In brief
  • The term comes from marketing practice, and nobody has fixed a definition.
  • A language model talks about you either from its training knowledge or from pages it looks up live.
  • Only the second route can be influenced in the short term.
  • The answer decides whether it works, not the acronym in an offer.

Context

Is LLMO a separate approach, or does only the name give you something new?

Honestly, mostly the latter. The trade portals describing the term treat it as a working label in a field that is still sorting itself out, and list GEO, AEO and AIO as related names. LLM SEO came from the same practice as yet another label that is just as loosely defined.

The angle still helps. If you think from the language model's side, you don't start by asking about rankings but about how a model reads your content and what it ends up saying about you (right, wrong or nothing at all).

Practice

Which route to LLMO visibility can you influence in the short term?

From our own work we know one distinction that matters. A language model answers either from what it learned during training or from pages it searches on the web while answering. In our AI visibility analysis we therefore record whether a system answered with or without web search, because the results can differ a lot.

Only the second route can be influenced quickly, through your website and through mentions on other sites. The entry on RAG explains how a model pulls such pages into an answer.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What exactly does the acronym stand for?

Large language model optimization, meaning optimization for large language models. Nobody has settled on a binding definition, and many people say LLM SEO instead.

How does it differ from GEO?

GEO comes from a research paper and thinks from the search system that combines sources into an answer. The younger term comes from practitioners and looks at the language model. In practice both are often used as synonyms.

What should SEO plugins for LLMO reporting show?

We can't vouch for any particular plugin. Whatever the tool, a useful report shows how often you are named compared with competitors, whether you are only mentioned or cited as a source, whether the facts are right, the tone the AI uses and your position in a list of recommendations.

What a language model says about your company can be checked, and that is a better starting point than any new acronym.
