Request a GEO analysis or call: +49 151 1576 5566A GEO agency makes sure AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews know your brand, describe it correctly and recommend it. GEO stands for generative engine optimization, also called AIO or AI SEO. At Scalableloops we start with our AI visibility analysis to measure how often and in what way your brand appears in AI answers. Our GEO audit then examines technology, content and third-party sources, and we implement the fixes: structured data, content that is easy to cite, mentions on trusted external sites and open access for AI crawlers. Solid search engine optimization remains the foundation.
- GEO optimizes for being mentioned and cited in AI answers, beyond positions in the list of search results.
- Our AI visibility analysis puts real customer questions to several AI systems without naming your brand.
- Our GEO audit covers crawler access, content, authority, your brand as an entity and presence in comparison sources.
- Google sets no special rules for AI Overviews: SEO fundamentals carry the load, GEO builds on top.

What is GEO, and what does a GEO agency do?
Generative engine optimization covers everything that makes content show up more often in the answers of generative search systems. The term comes from a study by researchers around Princeton University, presented at the KDD conference in 2024. The authors show that targeted changes to content increased visibility in such answers by up to 40 percent.
Several labels are in use: GEO, AIO for artificial intelligence optimization, AI SEO, AEO or LLMO. They all point to the same goal. We sort out the terms in GEO, AEO and LLMO explained.
A GEO agency does three things: it measures where your brand stands in AI answers today, finds out what drives that result, and implements improvements on your website and beyond it. That is exactly how we work.
That is how much the best methods in the study that coined the term GEO raised visibility in generative engine responses.
Why is traditional SEO no longer enough on its own?
Search engine optimization had a clear target: a strong position in the results and a click to your site. AI assistants change that path. They answer the question directly, combine several sources and name a handful of brands along the way. If you are missing from that answer, buyers may never consider you, even when your website ranks well.
Search behaviour shifts as well. People do not type two keywords into a chat. They write full sentences with context: their role, budget and use case. The AI understands that intent and builds its answer from what it finds across many sites. Your website is one source among many; trade articles, directories, reviews and forums shape how your brand comes across.
One point matters for perspective: Google itself lists no additional requirements and no special optimization for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Foundational SEO practices still apply. For us this means SEO is the base, and GEO adds measurement inside AI systems, content that is easy to cite and authority beyond your own domain. Read more in AI SEO: what changes for your website and Google AI Overviews.
How can you tell whether your brand is visible in AI answers?
Click-through rate, organic traffic and rankings only tell part of the story once users get their answer inside the chat. Falling traffic then does not necessarily mean falling demand. In our white paper on visibility in AI systems we therefore describe a set of metrics built on three pillars: presence, perception and market penetration.
We track these metrics in every analysis. For a first check you can run yourself, see How to measure AI visibility.
| Traditional metric | Why it falls short on its own | New metric | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Click-through rate and organic traffic | The answer sits in the chat, so the click often never happens | Share of mention | Your share of mentions across relevant AI answers |
| Keyword rankings | AI answers appear above or instead of the results list | Comparative position | Your place within the AI's list of recommendations |
| Number of backlinks | Mentions in credible sources act as trust signals | Mention or citation | Whether you are only named or linked as a source |
| Conversion rate from organic traffic | The touchpoint inside the AI answer stays invisible | Branded searches and direct enquiries | Whether mentions lead to searches for your name, calls and emails |
| Search volume per keyword | Every user phrases questions differently | Sentiment and brand mention accuracy | The tone and correctness of what the AI says about you |
How does our AI visibility analysis work?
Our AI visibility analysis puts the questions your customers actually ask to several AI systems: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. We leave your brand name out of the prompts, because we want to see whether the AI recommends you on its own.
We group the prompts by topic area and by four question types. For every answer we record whether your brand appears, in which position, in what tone, whether the statements are accurate, which competitors show up and which sources the AI draws on. We do not fix the competitor set in advance. It emerges from the answers, since the AI decides whom to name, and it often surfaces providers nobody had on their list.
There are two formats. The short analysis gives you a direction and shows the biggest gaps. The detailed analysis covers more topic areas and repeats the queries several times at intervals, because AI answers to the same question vary. Only repeated runs turn a snapshot into a reliable figure. How ChatGPT picks its sources is covered in ChatGPT SEO.
- 01
Question type
Recommendation"Which provider is good for …?" shows whether you appear in general buying advice.
- 02
Question type
Problem"I have this problem, who can solve it?" measures visibility in your customers' own words.
- 03
Question type
Real-world scenario"As a company with this task I need …" reflects decision makers with a role and context.
- 04
Question type
Standard or specification"Which product meets this requirement?" is often where you stand out most from competitors.
What does our GEO audit check, on your site and off it?
The analysis shows where you stand. Our GEO audit explains why. We work with a criteria catalogue that we keep updating from research, provider documentation and our own tests. Every criterion has a measurement method and a rating of how well its effect is supported, so we can separate solid levers from guesswork.
An example from our work: at a machinery manufacturer, the website firewall turned away every AI crawler. The content was good, but none of the systems could fetch it. Blocks like this go unnoticed because the site works normally for human visitors.

How do findings turn into recommendations that hold up?
We work in nine phases. We start from the current state of knowledge and a catalogue of testable criteria, derive hypotheses for your brand and test them before recommending anything. A recommendation only makes the cut when it holds across several AI systems.
| Phase | What happens | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| State of knowledge | Review studies, provider documentation and our own measurements | Current foundation with sources |
| Criteria catalogue | Tailor the criteria to your industry | Checklist with measurement methods |
| Hypotheses | Formulate possible causes of your visibility | Testable assumptions |
| Test design | Define a suitable test for each hypothesis | Test plan |
| Tooling | Set up scripts for crawlers, schema, content and sources | Repeatable measurement |
| Live tests | Test hypotheses across AI systems and repeated runs | Measured values instead of assumptions |
| Cross-check | Compare test results against research | Confirmed and rejected levers |
| Recommendations | Rank measures by effort and impact | Implementation plan |
| Presentation | Prepare and review the results in plain language | A deck for your decision |
What do we implement to improve your AI visibility?
Structured data. We add schema.org markup such as Organization, Service, Article, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList that matches the visible text. Google stresses that AI Overviews need no special markup, so we treat schema as part of a clean foundation that helps search engines identify your business, not as a shortcut.
Content that is easy to cite. We rework your key pages so the core statement sits in the first paragraph, figures carry a source and comparisons appear as tables. We add common customer questions with clear answers and a visible last-updated date.
Third-party sources. AI systems rely on more than your website. Together with you we plan expert articles, listings in relevant directories and portals, and PR, so your brand shows up where the AI looks things up.
Crawler access. We check robots.txt and your firewall. OpenAI, for instance, separates its crawler for ChatGPT search (OAI-SearchBot) from its crawler for model training (GPTBot). You can opt out of training and still be findable in search.
llms.txt. The file was published as a proposal in 2024 to give language models a compact overview of a website. Google explicitly says it is not needed for AI Overviews. We set it up where it helps agents find their way around, without promising rankings. Details in our article llms.txt.
SEO vs. GEO: what is the difference?
SEO and GEO are not either-or. GEO picks up where the results list ends and the AI answer begins. The overview shows how goals, measurement and measures shift.
| Aspect | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A strong position in the results and the click | Being mentioned and cited in the AI answer |
| Query | Short keywords | Full sentences with context and intent |
| Key sources | Mainly your own website | Your website plus trade press, portals, reviews, forums |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks, traffic | Share of mention, position in the recommendation, tone, accuracy |
| Technology | Indexing for search engines | Plus access for AI crawlers and clear entities |
| Content | Relevance for a keyword | Citable statements, sourced figures, direct answers |
Who benefits from working with a GEO agency?
GEO pays off for companies whose customers research and compare before they buy: B2B manufacturers, service providers, online shops with products that need explaining, and regional businesses. If your brand ought to be known in its market, we check whether AI systems see it the same way.
We are based in Eggenfelden and Passau in Lower Bavaria, Germany, and combine AI systems, AI training and online marketing. If your team wants to learn how AI assistants weigh information, we pair the work with AI training. We do not guarantee mentions, because no agency controls how providers generate answers. What we deliver is honest measurement and measures whose effect we measure again.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a GEO agency cost?
It depends on scope: how many topic areas, AI systems and markets we measure, and which measures we take on. After a short call you receive a proposal that lists analysis, audit and implementation separately.
Is GEO the same as SEO?
No. GEO builds on SEO. SEO aims for rankings and clicks in search engines, GEO for being mentioned and cited in AI answers. Google itself says the usual SEO fundamentals apply to AI Overviews.
Which AI systems do you cover?
Our AI visibility analysis queries ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity and evaluates Google AI Overviews. We add further systems if they matter to your audience.
How quickly will I see results?
Technical blocks such as a locked-out crawler can be fixed quickly. New content and mentions on third-party sites take longer before AI systems pick them up, which is why we measure before and at fixed intervals afterwards.
Can you guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my brand?
No. No AI provider discloses exactly how answers are produced, and answers vary. We improve the conditions that demonstrably matter and make the change measurable.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Not for Google AI Overviews, as Google makes clear. It can be useful if agents should find their way around your site faster, for example in online shops. We decide site by site.
