Check your AI Mode visibility or call: +49 151 1576 5566Google AI Mode is a separate search experience in which Google answers complex questions with an AI response, lets you ask follow-up questions and links to websites. In Germany it has been available in German since 8 October 2025, from the Google homepage, a dedicated tab on the results page and the Google app. For site owners, Google applies the same rule as for AI Overviews: a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and there are no additional technical requirements. If you want to be cited there, you need solid SEO, content with real substance and measurement that shows where your site turns up in AI answers.

What is Google AI Mode?
Google AI Mode is a search mode that gives you a written answer instead of a list of links and lets you keep the conversation going with follow-up questions. Google calls it its most powerful AI search, with more advanced reasoning, the ability to dig deeper and helpful links to the web. According to Google, you can ask by text, by voice or with an image.
Under the hood, AI Mode runs on a custom version of Google's Gemini models. Google's documentation for site owners says it is particularly helpful for queries that call for further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons. Think of questions that used to take several searches in a row.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai put a number on its reach in July 2025: AI Mode then had over 100 million monthly active users, in the US and India only, where it was available at the time. Google does not publish figures for Germany.
When did Google AI Mode launch in Germany?
On 8 October 2025. That day Google launched AI Mode in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, in German for users in Germany. You reach it from the Google homepage, a dedicated tab on the results page and the Google app for Android and iOS. Google switched it on gradually, so not every user saw it on the same day.
The launch was part of a wider expansion: on 7 October 2025 Google announced AI Mode in more than 35 new languages and over 40 new countries and territories. In the US it has been open to all users since 20 May 2025, announced at the Google I/O developer conference.
For your analytics, October 2025 is therefore a second reference point next to the launch of AI Overviews in March 2025. When AI Overviews reached Germany and what they changed is covered in our article on Google AI Overviews.
AI Mode launches in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, in German for users in Germany.
How does AI Mode differ from AI Overviews?
Both features share the same technology but serve different situations. Google shows AI Overviews automatically above the regular results when a summary looks helpful. AI Mode is something users choose deliberately to explore a question in depth. The table sets out the differences Google describes in its documentation and announcements.
For businesses this means: if you appear in AI Overviews, you already meet the technical conditions for AI Mode. Which pages actually get linked can still differ, because the question evolves with every follow-up.
| Aspect | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Appears automatically above the search results | Dedicated tab, homepage or Google app, chosen by the user |
| Format | Summary in a few paragraphs | Detailed answer with follow-up questions |
| Typical questions | Questions where a short summary from several sources helps | Questions involving exploration, reasoning and complex comparisons |
| Input | Regular search query | Text, voice or image |
| Sources | Links to websites from Search's ranking systems, partly via sub-searches | Links to websites, the question is split into many simultaneous sub-searches |
| Launch in Germany | 26 March 2025 | 8 October 2025 |
| Search Console | Impressions in the AI report, clicks in the performance report under Web | Same: impressions in the AI report, clicks under Web |
How does Google AI Mode choose its sources?
Through regular Google Search. Google says its AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems. The model retrieves current web pages that those systems consider relevant and grounds its answer in them, a technique Google calls grounding or retrieval-augmented generation.
On top of that comes query fan-out. AI Mode breaks a question into subtopics and runs many related searches at once across different data sources. The result is a broader set of links than a single search would return. Your page can therefore show up as a source even if it answers only one aspect of the question particularly well.
Google states the precondition briefly: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. There are no other technical requirements. Google offers no guarantee of being cited, just as it offers none for classic rankings.
What does Google say about optimising for AI Mode?
In May 2026 Google published a dedicated guide on optimising for generative AI search in Search Central, last updated in July 2026. It covers AI Overviews and AI Mode alike. Its core message: established SEO practice still applies, because the AI features build on Search's ranking and quality systems.
According to Google, you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup, which includes the much-discussed llms.txt. Nor do you need to break content into small chunks or rewrite it specifically for AI search. Structured data is not required for generative AI search, and there is no special schema.org markup for it. Seeking inauthentic mentions across the web, Google says, is less helpful than it may seem.
What Google does recommend is content with real substance that does not simply repeat what others have said or what an AI model could easily produce. It also points to high-quality images and video, well-maintained Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profiles, a good experience on every device and meeting Search's technical requirements.
That matches our view of AI SEO: no new craft, but a higher bar for content that genuinely answers a question.
How can your website become a source in Google AI Mode?
Google's guidance translates into five areas of work. The first two are conditions: without them, the rest has no effect.
- 01
01
Secure indexing and snippetsCheck in Search Console that your key pages are indexed. Make sure neither
noindexnornosnippetis set by mistake, because either one rules a page out as a source for AI Mode. - 02
02
Get the technical basics rightYour pages must be accessible to Googlebot, load quickly and work well on every device. Internal links help Google find deeper pages. These are the same basics as in classic search.
- 03
03
Answer sub-questions directlyBecause AI Mode splits a question into subtopics, it pays to write sections that each answer one specific customer question on their own: answer first, then explanation and detail.
- 04
04
Bring your own substanceShow what only you know: experience from your projects, your own data, practical comparisons, your own images and video. This is exactly the kind of content Google names as the alternative to interchangeable text.
- 05
05
Maintain your business dataKeep your Google Business Profile up to date and, if you sell products, supply clean product data through Merchant Center. Google explicitly names both as ways to be visible in generative search.
How do you measure your visibility in Google AI Mode?
With the AI report in Google Search Console. It shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, date and device. Google says it has been available to all websites worldwide since 31 August 2026. Sites with too few impressions in AI features will still see no data.
The AI report does not show clicks. Google counts AI Mode traffic as part of your overall search traffic in Search Console, in the performance report under the Web search type. There is no separate click figure for AI Mode there.
What Search Console cannot tell you: for which questions competitors are linked instead of you, which third-party sources AI Mode draws on and how your business is described in the answer. That is what our AI visibility analysis covers: we ask your customers' questions repeatedly in Google Search and in other AI systems. How to start measuring yourself is explained in our article on measuring AI visibility, and the full analysis is available through our GEO agency.
Can you keep your content out of AI Mode?
Yes, but it affects your whole search presence. According to Google, the nosnippet robots meta tag prevents content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. It applies to all search results, though, so your page then appears without a text snippet in regular search as well. max-snippet limits how much text may be used, again for every result type.
The Google-Extended control in robots.txt is a different matter: it governs whether content may be used to train Gemini models and, according to Google, has no effect on inclusion in Google Search. For most businesses, opting out is the wrong move anyway: if you are missing from AI Mode, your competitors get the answer.
Helping your team make decisions like these and handle AI in search with confidence is part of our AI training.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI Mode the same as the German KI-Modus?
Yes. KI-Modus is simply the German name for Google AI Mode. Both refer to the same Google Search feature.
When did Google AI Mode become available in Germany?
On 8 October 2025, in German. Google launched it the same day in Austria and Switzerland and rolled it out gradually.
Do I need an llms.txt or special markup for AI Mode?
No. Google's guide on generative AI search says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup. The precondition is that your page is indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet.
Is AI Mode SEO different from regular SEO?
Not according to Google. Its AI features rest on Search's ranking and quality systems. What counts for more is content with real substance, clear answers to sub-questions and well-maintained business data.
Can I see whether my website appears in AI Mode?
Yes, in the AI report in Google Search Console. It shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, date and device, but no clicks. Clicks are included in the performance report under the Web search type.
Will blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Mode?
No. According to Google, Google-Extended controls use for training Gemini models and does not affect inclusion in Google Search. Only a tag such as nosnippet would keep you out of AI Mode, and it applies to all search results.
How to get your website into AI Mode
