AI glossary · AI Mode (Google)

Google AI Mode, called KI-Modus in German, is a separate search experience in which Google answers complex questions with an AI response, lets people ask follow-up questions and links to websites. In Germany it has been available in German since 8 October 2025. For your page to qualify as a source, Google says it must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and there are no further technical requirements.

In brief
  • Available in German since 8 October 2025, from the Google homepage, a dedicated tab and the Google app.
  • People open it on purpose, whereas Google shows AI Overviews on its own above the regular results.
  • According to Google's guide, you need neither an llms.txt nor special markup for it.

Definition

What Google AI Mode offers your customers on harder questions

In AI Mode people get a written answer instead of a list of results and can keep the conversation going with follow-up questions. According to Google, questions can be typed, spoken or asked with an image. It is meant for queries where you explore, weigh options or compare in depth.

Sources

How your website gets cited as a source in Google AI Mode

AI Mode breaks a question into subtopics and runs many related searches at the same time, which Google calls query fan-out. That is mostly good news for you, because your page can be linked even if it answers only one aspect of the question particularly well rather than the main question.

According to Google, source selection rests on the core ranking and quality systems of regular Search, and it mainly recommends content with real substance and a maintained Business Profile. It does not guarantee that any page will be cited, though.

Measurement

How you can tell whether Google AI Mode already shows your pages

Since 31 August 2026, Google says, the AI report in Search Console has been available worldwide. It shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, date and device. What it does not show is who gets linked instead of you for your customers' questions, and you only find that out by asking those questions yourself and noting which websites appear in the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Mode the same as the German KI-Modus?

Yes. KI-Modus is simply the German name, and both refer to the same Google Search feature.

Will blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Mode?

No. According to Google, Google-Extended controls use for training Gemini models and does not affect inclusion in Google Search. Only a tag such as nosnippet would keep you out, and it applies to all search results.
