AI glossary · AI governance

AI governance covers the rules, roles and technical safeguards a company uses to steer how it applies AI, and to prove that it does so responsibly. It sounds like something for large corporations, but at its core is a question any business can ask: could we show afterwards what our AI actually did?

In brief
  • AI compliance means meeting individual requirements; governance is the framework around them.
  • It includes logs, approvals by people and a trained team.
  • The GDPR already asks for evidence, regardless of how risky a system is.

Benefit

Why do businesses need AI governance?

So that they do not have to rely on people's memories when something goes wrong. If a customer asks why an assistant gave a particular answer, or an error turns up internally, a short log is often the only way to trace what happened. That only works if the system itself records what went in, what came out and who approved it, which is why we plan logging and approval in while building rather than afterwards.

Law

Which obligations does AI governance cover?

AI regulation and governance meet at three points of the EU AI Act in particular. Article 4 has required measures for AI literacy since February 2025, Article 50 the AI notice in chat and on the phone since August 2026, and for high-risk systems automatic logs under Articles 12, 19 and 26 follow later, to be kept for at least six months. Alongside sits GDPR accountability in Article 5(2). Governance brings all this together in one place instead of scattering it across separate documents.

Practice

Why do AI governance and audit logs belong together?

Because a system that keeps no logs cannot be checked later, however well the policy is written. To start with you rarely need more than a list of AI systems with role and purpose, a justified deletion period for each, a rule on who approves results that leave the company, and a file on training. The one thing that really matters is that the approval itself ends up in the log.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AI governance and AI compliance?

AI compliance is about meeting specific requirements, from the EU AI Act or the GDPR for instance. Governance adds the roles, rules, approvals and logs with which a company steers its use of AI and can prove it.

Do you need an AI officer for AI governance?

Not for AI literacy under Article 4, since the Bundesnetzagentur expressly lists a dedicated AI officer among the things that are not mandatory. Whether a committee helps in your own company depends on how many AI systems run and who decides about them.
