Amberg is the regional center of the central Upper Palatinate and had 42,631 inhabitants as of December 31, 2025. Its largest employer is Siemens, with two plants for switchgear and programmable logic controllers; according to Siemens, the electronics plant serves as a blueprint for the digital factory. The city names metalworking and mechanical engineering, electronics, printing, automation, and environmental and energy technology as its key industries.

At its Amberg campus, OTH Amberg-Weiden offers a bachelor's and a master's program in Artificial Intelligence. The Digitale Gründerinitiative Oberpfalz operates co-working spaces for digital founders on Fleurystraße and has been involved in the European innovation hub edih dina since September 2026.
