Its sync endpoint creates or updates many records in a single request. That lets you make bulk changes without leaving permanent code in the shop.
- The Admin API fits when another system needs to read or write data in the shop.
- Shopware apps also work with the shop's data through the Admin API.
- Anything that must happen with every order in the shop, such as a custom pricing rule in the cart, needs a plugin or an app.
What the Shopware Admin API spares you a custom plugin for
Connecting an ERP, a PIM or shipping is the typical case. Stock levels, prices and order status travel through the interface, and no extra code is left in the shop that would need maintaining with every update.
The limit is reached where something has to happen with every order or page view inside the shop. No interface can do that from outside, that takes a plugin or an app.
How the sync endpoint keeps bulk changes safe
One example from our work for a pram manufacturer: 23 product variants needed an EAN for Google Shopping. In the admin interface the editing broke off after two entries with a timeout and the CSV import reported errors, so we set the remaining 21 through the Admin API, without any plugin.
What matters with such runs is the order: read the existing data first, write only the one target field and then check every single record. The sync endpoint is also searched for as Shopware sync API.
Why Shopware apps work through the Admin API and what you gain
A plugin runs inside the Shopware process and accesses the database directly. An app stays outside, is described by a manifest.xml file, receives events via webhooks and works with the data through the Admin API, so it cannot change the shop's database structure but does run in Shopware Cloud, where plugins are not supported.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a plugin for a bulk change?
Usually not, the Admin API is enough, for example the sync endpoint. Just read the existing data first and check every record afterwards.
When is the Shopware Admin API enough instead of a custom plugin?
When another system needs to read or write data in the shop and no rule has to apply within the shop's own processes.
