Shopware stopped developing Shopware 5 at the end of July 2024 after a four-year transition period and has shipped no security fixes since. Plugins from Shopware 5 do not run on Shopware 6, so every single one goes on the list when you switch.
- Since late July 2024 the vendor has shipped no security fixes for Shopware 5, and paid patches only come from a third party.
- The Shopware 6 Update Check in the old backend shows which of your installed plugins exist for Shopware 6.
- Data that extensions stored in their own tables needs checking by hand after the migration.
Why a Shopware 5 plugin does not come with you when you switch
Shopware itself says version 5 is built on technologies that no longer support current requirements, which is why Shopware 6 was developed from scratch. Three things mostly stay behind in a migration: the theme, the plugins and the shopping worlds.
The old shop keeps running, it is just that nobody officially closes newly known gaps anymore. And because theme and plugins do not come along, any tag, pixel or consent banner built into them is missing after the move as well.
How you find the right replacement for each Shopware 5 plugin
In the Shopware 5 backend, the Shopware 6 Update Check appears under the question mark and shows in its own tab which plugins exist for Shopware 6. That gives you the list where every plugin gets a replacement, a rebuild or a deliberate note that it is dropped.
When rebuilding beats keeping the old Shopware 5 plugin
Shopware 6 knows two kinds of extensions. A plugin runs inside the Shopware process with access to the database, an app stays outside and works through webhooks and the Admin API, and only the app also runs in Shopware Cloud.
Whether you rent a store extension or have one built mainly depends on whether it reflects your process or you would have to bend your process to fit it. For a one-off bulk change, a script via the Admin API is often enough.
Frequently asked questions
Will my Shopware 5 plugins keep working after the migration?
No. You need a Shopware 6 version from the vendor, a different extension or a new development.
Is Shopware 5 plugin development still worth it?
Shopware 5 has received no security fixes from the vendor since late July 2024, and the plugin would have to be replaced when you switch anyway. New functions are therefore better planned straight away as a plugin or app for Shopware 6.
