AI glossary · Google indexing

Google indexing means that Google has added a page to its search index. If a page is missing from the index, it is invisible in classic search and in Google's AI answers at the same time. You can ask for it in Search Console, but Google alone decides.

In brief
  • You submit individual pages through URL Inspection in Search Console and many pages through a sitemap.
  • Requests are subject to a daily limit per property, and Google does not publish the exact number.
  • Google speaks of a few days to a few weeks before a page is crawled.
  • AI Overviews and AI Mode only show indexed pages that are allowed to display a snippet.

How to trigger Google indexing and when a sitemap works better

For a single page, open Google Search Console, paste the URL into the URL Inspection field and click “Request indexing”. Only property owners and full users see that button. Test the live URL first: if it shows a noindex or a block, the request is pointless and still uses up an attempt from your daily limit.

For many URLs, a new website or a domain move, a sitemap is the better route. It lists every URL you want indexed, up to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed per file, and you can submit it in the Sitemaps report, through the API or with a line in robots.txt. For Google it is only a hint as well.

Causes

Why a page stays out of the Google index despite a request

A request is a plea, not an order, and according to Google submitting the same URL several times does not get it indexed any faster. If a page stays out, the Page indexing report usually shows why: a noindex in the code or HTTP header, a block in robots.txt, a duplicate where Google prefers another version, or content that barely differs from other pages.

If the report says “Crawled, currently not indexed”, another request will not help. Google has read the page and decided against it for now. What remains is to make it better, with real substance of its own and links from other pages on your site.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does Google indexing take?

Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks, and it makes no promise anywhere that a page will be included.

How often can I request indexing?

As often as the daily limit of your property allows, and Google does not say how high that is. Requesting the same URL again is wasted, because it does not speed anything up.

Can I use the Indexing API for normal pages?

No. Google only permits it for job postings and livestream videos, checks every submission for spam and can revoke access if it is misused.
