AI glossary · OAI-SearchBot

OAI-SearchBot is the crawler OpenAI uses to build the index for ChatGPT search. ChatGPT pulls current sources from that index and links them in its answers. According to OpenAI, sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

In brief
  • For mentions in ChatGPT search, OAI-SearchBot is what counts. GPTBot only concerns training.
  • According to OpenAI, ChatGPT-User does not decide whether a page is included in search.
  • Allowing it in robots.txt does nothing if a firewall or bot protection turns it away.
  • Cloudflare has blocked AI crawlers by default for newly added domains since July 2025.

Role

Why OAI-SearchBot matters more than GPTBot for being named in ChatGPT

OpenAI runs a separate crawler for each job. GPTBot gathers training material, ChatGPT-User fetches a page when someone asks for it in a chat, and OAI-SearchBot reads websites for the search index. Only the last one determines whether your pages can show up as a source in a ChatGPT search answer.

So if you want to keep your content out of training and still be found, you block GPTBot and allow OAI-SearchBot. The two decisions are independent of each other, and that is what makes the split so useful for a business.

In practice

How to check whether OAI-SearchBot actually reaches your website

Start with robots.txt. If OAI-SearchBot has its own group there, RFC 9309 says only that group applies to it, so any blocks from the general User-agent: * group have to be repeated inside it. Otherwise the crawler may enter exactly the directories you wanted to keep closed.

Then look beyond the file. Firewalls, bot protection and hosting decide first whether a crawler gets through at all, and Cloudflare (which says around 20 percent of web traffic runs through its network) has blocked AI crawlers by default for new domains since July 2025. If OAI-SearchBot and the other search crawlers show up in your server logs with error codes, the cause is usually technical rather than about your content.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is OAI-SearchBot?

The crawler OpenAI uses to read websites for ChatGPT search. It builds the index from which ChatGPT cites and links sources.

Should I allow OAI-SearchBot?

Yes, if you want to be mentioned in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI states explicitly that sites opted out of it will not be shown there.

How long until allowing it takes effect?

OpenAI says it can take around 24 hours for its systems to reflect an updated robots.txt. If nothing changes after that, check your firewall and bot protection.
