What you get at the end is not a reply but a finished action, say a record created in the right system or a draft waiting for your approval.

How you can tell agentic AI apart from a chatbot
Ask a chatbot what a quote might look like and it writes one for you. An agentic system gathers the figures itself, creates the quote in the right program and hands it to you for sign-off.
That shift from text to action changes the risk, because you can skip a wrong answer but a wrong action has already happened. It also pays to look twice when buying, since Gartner estimates that only about 130 of the thousands of vendors offer real agentic capabilities (the rest it calls agent washing).
What the EU AI Act means for agentic AI in your business
Agents fall under the definition of an AI system in Article 3(1), so your obligations depend on what the agent is used for. If it talks to people, the transparency rules in Article 50 have applied since 2 August 2026, and the high-risk rules for Annex III systems apply from 2 December 2027.
Where agentic AI saves your team real time
Mostly where someone pulls information from three or four programs and then does something with it: sorting incoming requests, collecting data, preparing drafts of replies or reports. Not glamorous, but it takes work off your specialists while the decision stays with them.
OWASP names three causes of too much agency, namely too many functions, too broad permissions and too much autonomy, and that works well as a checklist. Our AI agent system runs on your own server, and anything going out is approved by someone on your team first.

Is ChatGPT agentic AI?
Asking it a question and reading the answer is ordinary generative AI. It becomes agentic once the system pursues a goal over several steps, uses programs or databases and carries out an action.
Why do so many agentic AI projects fail?
Gartner points to rising costs, unclear business value and inadequate risk controls. A small case whose benefit you can measure afterwards is probably the better place to start.
